During
the recent Kinsmen club meeting (June
17) a discussion regarding safety
issues at our races came up. As always,
safety at the track is an onging subject
matter. A question arose about what
was acceptable and unacceptable at
pre-tech. There seems to be a consensus
among some racers that pre-tech is
a formalilty and has little to do
with the safety of our racers or themselves
and therefore has little relevance.
This is not the case.. Anyone that
brings their kart to Kinsmen's pre-tech
should know that their equipment will
be inspected as per the WKA/IKF Tech
Manuals. The specific areas in question,
repeatedly seems to be what constitutes
the correct method of securing safety
wiring or cotter pin, to bolts. The
manual states that all bolts shall
be drilled, so that a safety wire
or a cotter pin will pass through
them. If you use safety wire, you
need to properly twist the wire. If
you use a cotter pin you need to bend
the cotter pin properly. It is not
acceptable to just wrap or twist the
wire around the threads of a bolt
or pin. However, where a groove for
a circlip or snap ring has been machined,
this is acceptable. (This method is
usually found on the Italian karts.)
By now, everyone should know that
weights must be painted white and
that every kart must have a chain
guard. Section 105 of the tech manual
address safety. Section 105.2 addresses
chassis safety. If you do not own
a manual, get with someone that does.
Kinsmen is proud of the fact that
we do not have racers hurt or races
stopped because something fell off
a kart during a race
